Physiological Training Unit, Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane WA
This project was the design-build of a Physiological Training Facility, which is a new standalone facility developed to support the Air Force’s on-going mission to maintain the high level of physical performance for those assigned to high-altitude flight and associated missions and is in direct response to the objectives of new mission specific facilities in the Fairchild AFB community. This fast track design-build project for the Physiological Training Facility consists of a one-story administrative and training building accommodating approximately 22 personnel.
This facility was awarded the USGBC LEED-NC Silver Certification. Soon after award, MZT was given the opportunity to relocate the hypobaric chamber into this new facility. This chamber was in an existing building. MZT was required to design an opening in the exterior structural brick wall of the building that contained the chamber. MZT developed a steel plate system with casters to support the chamber during the move. The plate with castors allowed the chamber to be rotated and then rolled through the wall opening. We then replaced the wall and renovated the old chamber room area into office spaces. The building where the chamber was located was occupied at all times during the demolition of the opening, placement of the steel beam to support the wall, movement of the chamber, replacement of the wall and finishing of the new office space. Occupants of this facility commented to MZT staff that they appreciated the way the work was accomplished with minimal dust and noise. |
